Posted on Tue, 29 Sep 2015
Question: I am a 63 yr old man. My hair started thinning in my early 50s. It is dry now and grows very slowly. I also have very dry skin and have recently noticed sort of ridges on my toenails. Could these things be related?

Brief Answer:
Alopecia due to aging

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns.

You have noticed a change in the skin condition of your scalp and along with that a change in your hair. The hair loss is just due to male patterned baldness and nor due to skin changes. To help regain your hair you can try using rogaine lotion. this lotion may also help the dry skin and improve your overall scalp and hair condition.

The ridges on you nails is not associated with any particular disease entity. Some anemic and nutritional deficits can cause nail changes. These include iron deficiency and protein deficiency. Ridging of the nails though are normal and not associated with any disease process.
