Question : I hurt my upper left arm by falling on it while snowboarding. The upper part of my arm hurts with a dulling pain and my thumb is numb. what should i do?

The fact that the thumb is numb means that the nerve might have been damaged a little.
Try to not overuse the arm in the following days.
Don't sleep in that side.
Take Ibuprofen regularly, every 8 hours, so it will decrease the inflammation.
Apply a local analgesic 3-4 times/day.
Ice/heat may help.

If worse or not better after 5 days, consider a visit to an orthopedist and an x-ray
