Suggest Treatment For Duodenal Ulcer

Question: How many calories should an inactive 93 year old female take in during a day?. She is 5 foot 2 and weighs 130.She would like to maintain this weight. She is also hampered by a duodenal ulcer and does not feel like eating

She will require 3250 kcal/day for maintenance.

Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. She will require 25-30 kcal/kg/day. Around 3250 kcal/day. This is for maintenance purpose.

2. It needs to be taken in 6-8 meals per day. On an average, if she is taking 8 meals, she will need 400 kcal per meal.

3. Protein should be 1.2g/kg/day. It should be around 150 g/day. Rest can be carbohydrates. Fat should be minor component. Add more fiber in your diet.

4. For duodenal ulcer, she will need to be on proton pump inhibitors. She is already on Prilosec and you can continue the same.
