Question : My 2 year old was just put on Amoxcillian for ear infections. He became agitated, hyperactive and very agressive after taking the 500 mgs every 12 hours. Is this a rare occurrence with a side effect? Should he be put on a different anti-biotic?

Hi...even for ear infection 1000mg Amoxycillin is a bit high. Kindly let me know his weight and I will help you. Has he used any other antibiotic in the past 30 days.

Other option is Azithromycin

Hi....this seems to be an appropriate dose. But it is very unusual for Amoxycillin to have caused this irritability and hyperactive behavior. But in medical science nothing can be ruled out as an absolute.

Coming to your queries -
1. This might be a side effect.
2. The other option is to use Azithromycin at 10mg/kg/day as single daily dose for 5 days.
