Suggest Treatment For Elevated AST And ALT Levels

Question: I am 56 years old, exercise four times weekly, am 5' 10" and weigh 250 lbs. Cholesterol is 141 treated with Crestor (20mg), and BP is maintained with Cozaar (10mg) daily. A1c is 5.6, and I take Metformin 500mg twice daily. Fasting glucose is 98. My brother just passed away at age 60 from XXXXXXX and my AST was 78 and ALT was 50. Are these indications that I might be in early stages of NASH? I do not drink alcohol. What can I do (I'm on a diet to lose weight) to bring the AST and ALT back into normal ranges?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I understand your concern. It seems you had all the risk factors for NASH: Diabetes, overweight, high cholesterol, genetics and mildly elevated AST and ALT.
However, it seems your glucose levels and cholesterol are well under control, so keep it up. I also recommend you lose weight as the risk for developing XXXXXXX is reduced by 3% for every pound you shed. Physical activity and exercise have proven to be very effective too.
This is a race to beat the odds and you are on the right track. Losing weight is your next challenge and I'm sure you'll make it. Let me know if you have further questions.
Wishing you good health and all the best.
