Suggest Treatment For Elevated Liver Enzyme Levels

Question: Hello-
I'm a 31 yr old female and have just found out that I have a AST level of 250 and an ALT level of 350. I have been online researching what all that means and have been made extremely nervous. I am a heavy wine drinker, a bottle a night for probably 8 years with few days off. Last year I took a month off and this past month I have cut down drastically. Is this a sign that I have cirrhosis?? I also am considered obese at 5' 10" and 250 lbs with high cholesterol. Please tell me if this is indication of cirrhosis ??

Brief Answer:
Elevated liver functions

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are concerned about recent elevation in your liver enzymes. you touches on every aspect of your health that will affect your Liver enzymes, Alcohol, cholesterol and obesity. I would tell you the most offensive thing is the daily alcohol use. You actually maybe beginning to have cirrhosis so by stopping now you will reduce further damage and prevent any consequences of cirrhosis. I would also ask you to start a low fat diet with regular exercise to reduce the cholesterol and reduce your weight. You should weight no more than 170 so you have a long ways to go but take your time and perhaps in a year you can reach your goal.

In summary
1. stop alcohol
2. Improve diet and exercise
3. Loss weight
4. Do not get discouraged. The work will be well worth a healthy lifestyle

But do my AST/ALT indicate cirrhosis necessarily ? Or could it be something else?

Brief Answer:
Elevated liver functions

Detailed Answer:
The elevated liver functions only indicate ongoing liver damage. They do not and can not distinguish what is causing the damage. The only way to see exactly what is causing your damage is to have a liver biopsy. Liver biopsies are not a routine procedure and what you need to do first is the points I mentioned in my previous post.
