Brief Answer:
Surgery is decided on individual basis and follow up X ray is usually done

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
An enchondroma is a benign neoplasms of cartilaginous origin that appear in intramedullary bone. In my profession I have seen many patients with single or multiple enchondromas and none of them have been recommended surgery.

Surgery is decided upon based on its location, extent and risk of causing the bone to fracture. Follow up X rays are helpful to judge the changes in the enchondroma and possibility of bone fracture to occur.

Rarely, types of enchondromas can develop into malignant, or cancerous, bone tumors later and this is usually picked up early on follow up X rays.

Bone chip grafting might be required should there be a need for surgery and if the entire thickness of bone is involved and if it makes the bone weak.

Since there the risk of malignancy is rare and most patients do not have an extensive involvement of bone, surgery is not the first choice of treatment. Most patients are followed up by X rays every 6 to 12 months.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
