default
Posted on Mon, 12 Dec 2016
Question: For about few months, I am facing an issue of excessive fatigue and yawning in the morning especially when I am driving. I have some times even slept on wheels and had an accident one or two times. What could be possible cause for this? This happens only in morning. I have to take high caffeine or sleep for 30 mins in daytime to become active else my whole day goes like this.

Brief Answer:
Detailed evaluation is needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. We need to evaluate you to determine the cause of excessive sleepiness in mornings.

First of all, we would need to do an overnight sleep study (polysomnography) to evaluate the quality of night sleep and exclude OSA (obstructive sleep apnea).

Secondly, we need to do thyroid profile, as hypothyroidism (low level of thyroid hormones) can also cause fatigue and sleepiness.

I sincerely hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
