Question : I have had a somewhat heavy discharge in my right eye, which has now spread to both. It is yellow and thick..have a mild headache as well for last 2-3 days. I take meds for htn, aortic regurg, and cholesterol ..is there anything I can use over-the-counter for the discharge issue until I can see my dr.? She is also home with the flu.

Hello,

eye discharge can be caused by various medical conditions including infections. Since eye infections are very important because they may impair your vision, I would suggest applying an antibiotic like tobramycin on your eye (eye drops or eye cream). This way you're going to get some antibacterial protection until you can visit your doctor.

For patients with eye discharge I usually suggest urgently visiting an ophthalmologist, but if there is none you can visit, then the antibiotic sounds like a reasonable alternative.
