Suggest Treatment For Eye Infection And Swollen Lymph Nodes In The Neck

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Feb 2017
Question: My daughter started with an eye infection in her right eye and was given a sulfa drug which she took for 10 days. After the 7 th day her lymph nodes in the right side of her neck began to swell and her eye was still infected. Prescribed augmentin which she has taken for 3 days. There is no change in her eye, her lymph nodes are more swollen and now she has a low fever 101. Also had a CT scan which determined that there was no abcess; blood work 4 days ago was normal but that was before she got a fever. Her condition gets worse every day and the antibiotic has no effect. Should she wait on the antibiotic to work or try an ENT doctor? Or what else?

Brief Answer:
Needs ENT review and may need intravenous antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, it is sad to know what your daughter had been experiencing lately. Based on the history you have shared, it needs detailed ENT and ophthalmologist opinions and may need to repeat CT or go for MRI head and neck as well as orbits to assess for extent of infection as chances of infection are still very high.

Swab and blood cultures and sensitivity may be needed to identify the exact causative bug. A blood work up to look for white cell counts as well as CRP and ESR may be needed on regular basis after few days to monitor the effect of antibiotics and if needed she may need indoor admission for injectable antibiotics.

Till then continue augmentin and for pain and swelling anti inflammatory drugs like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be continued alongwith local anti inflammatory or antibiotic drops if suggested by the ophthalmologist.

Wishing her a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
