Suggest Treatment For Eye Problem Due To Bells Palsy

Posted on Wed, 13 Aug 2014
Question: Respected Dr,
I am suffering from bell's palsy since last 7 days. Currently I am taking the following medicines as advised by a neurologist.

[ 1 ] Tab prednasone ( 10 mg )

1-1-1-1 * 1 week
1-0-1-1 * 1 week
1-0-0-1 * 1 week
1-0-0-0 * 1 week

[ 2 ] Tab Acyclovir ( 400 mg )

1-1-1-1 * 10 days.

[ 3 ] Tab Pantodac ( 40 mg )

Additionally he has advised facial exercises to be done as frequently as possible.
I am unable to completely close my left eye. Occasionally tears are coming down the eye. Additionally I am getting irritation. I am applying "Refresh tears" eye drops 2 times a day. But the neurologist told to consult an opthalmologist and take anti-biotic eye drop as precaution. As per the Dr , the medications will take 2-3 weeks to suppress the problem and there by getting relief. Till that time I need to protect my eyes. Kindly advice.

Brief Answer:
You need to use artificial tears.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr. Dadapeer K an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

It seems from the history that you are having facial palsy and on treatment for it by neurologist.
The treatment as advised by your doctor is in right direction and do continue it.

In facial nerve palsy the ophthalmologist care is to prevent exposure of the eye and subsequent problems like exposure keratopathy. These problems occur because decreased blinking and inability yo close the eye completely.
Hence we treat prophylactically all cases with artificial tears like refresh tears used 4-6 times per day during day time.
Along with antibiotic eye drops like moxiflixacin can be used 2-3 tines a day.
If there is complete inability to close the eye taping the eyelids during night time is advised.
Eye examination once in 2 weeks is advised if the facial palsy recovery is delayed.

Hope the information is helpful to you.

Thank you

Sir,
As I understand , I need to increase the frequency of taking refresh tears 4/6 times a day. Along with that I need to take anti-biotic drop "moxiflixacin" 2-3 times a day.

Kindly suggest any alternative antibiotic drops in case this particular drop is unavailable in pharmacy shops.

Can I directly purchase and use this drop without visiting an opthalmologist at this stage ?

What symptoms of eyes should be monitored closely and require immediate attention ?
