Question : My 5 year old has felt warm to me for about a day or so. He complains of being cold. But is in good spirits, has an appetite and runs and plays with his brother exhibiting no signs of fatigue. Earlier today I noticed a bright green stool that had very little form to it but he has not been complaining of diarrhea. Just last night I checked his temperature and he had a fever of 101.5. We are vacationing with another family and my friend checked one of his sons temperature and found the same thing. His son is also in good spirit and hasn't been complaining. What would be the likely cause and how concerned should we be? Is there something going around? We are in the Los angeles area. What should we be keeping an eye out for?

Brief Answer:
Monitor his temperature and observe for any other symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

The most common cause of fever in this age is viral infection. In viral infection child remains playful and active when the fever subsides.
Fever may be the only initial symptom and gradually other symptoms like cold/cough (in respiratory infection) and loose stool/vomiting(in intestinal infection) appear.
The viral infection is contagious and your son may have acquired this from from his friend.
Make a temperature chart so that you can monitor the pattern of fever.Do tepid sponging and give paracetamol if fever is more than 100 F.Give him plenty of fluids to combat dehydration.Viral fever usually starts declining in severity or frequency after 3-4 days.I won't be worried for a single episode of green stool.
In the present situation I won't be overly worried and would like to observe the child for appearance of any new symptoms.
But if fever persists or the condition of the child deteriorates(loose stools/lethargic/irritable/decreased feeding) I will urge you to get him evaluated by a physician. As the child may need to be investigated for the cause and then management accordingly.
I shall be glad to answer if you have any concerns.
Wish your son good health.
Regards
