Question: My 8-yer old son came home with fever this evening. It has been spiking to nearly 103deg every 4 hours. Have given 7.5ml of calpol 250mg at 8pm and again at 12a.m. Fever is now again at 102.5. Wiped him down with wrm water. Should I continue with Calpol or start on any other medication?. He also had some chills earlier today around 10pm. Kindly advise.

Brief Answer:
Malaria and respiratory infections to be ruledout

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to address your query.

I am glad that you have started your kid on Calpol and sponging.

Fever with chills is commonly seen malaria, pneumonia/respiratory tract infection and typhoid is children. All these three conditions are equally important and I were to rule out by examination and relevant investigation based on findings(labs like QBS, peripheral smear for malarial parasite, chest X-ray etc) and plan my management/treatment depending on the cause.

Calpol(Paracetamol) reduces fever and donot treat the cause of fever. You may continue calpol and I would suggest to meet a pediatrician as early as possible.

Hope this answers your query.
