Question: I had a head cold several weeks ago which never completely went away. I still had a lot of nasal discharge. Now my face hurts and I have a low grade fever. No sneezing or coughing. Do I need an antibiotic?

Brief Answer:
If fever is there antibiotic is required.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern.
Usually low grade fever with nasal discharge is due to viral infection and no antibiotic is required.
However if the fever is high or the discharge is purulent (yellowish) then you would require to take antibiotics.
At your age we usually prescribe antibiotics to prevent secondary infections and Pneumonia.
In such scenario I advise following:
1. To take an antibiotic like Levofloxacin.
2. To take an Anti allergic like Levocetrizine.
3. To do steam inhalation.
4. To take Paracetamol for fever.
5. To do warm saline gargles.
The problem usually improves in 5 days.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
I hope it helps.
Stay Healthy.
