Suggest Treatment For Fever And Shivering In Child While Teething

Question: A couple of weeks ago, my son (9 months of age) started having bouts of shivering each lasting only a couple of seconds at a time although would have 2 - 3 episodes in succession. At the time, he was experiencing a fever and cutting new teeth therefore we simply put the symptom down to those two facts. However, his teeth have since come through and the fever has abated although the shivering episodes continue. He also tends to rub his ear(s), tilt his head and becomes irritable around the times that he shivers. Should I be seeking detailed medical advice?

Brief Answer:
Rule out infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for writing to us.
A 9 month old infant with fever shivering needs a thorough medical check up by a pediatrician .
The fever may be caused by urinary tract infection and also his ears have to be examined as you are saying he rubs his ears .
So please get a doctor to examine him and rule out any infection causing fever/
Meanwhile start oral paracetamol drops to reduce fever and give him a sponge bath with warm water to reduce the body temperature.
Don t delay the appointment with the doctor.
Thank you, regards.

Thank you for your response, however you may have misunderstood the question. The fever and teething are a historic symptom i.e he is no longer exhibiting those symptoms. The symptom which he does continue to exhibit are the "shivers". What I would like to know is in your professional experience, do you see infants exhibiting "shivers" when a fever is NOT present?

Brief Answer:
supplement with calcium and vitamin D 3.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for the follow up, sorry for misunderstanding the question.

Shivering in an infant without fever is not seen very often in our practice.
You may be describing it as shivering, but to tell there is no problem I would like to clarify few points,
1. how many times does it some,
2.how long does it last,
3. will the child loose its consciousness following the shivering episode,
4. weight and height of the child.

If there is no loss of consciousness, if the child is active play full, attaining all the mile stones like sitting with support, good neck control, crawling etc it may be a minor issue and supplements like calcium and vitamin D 3 must be started to reduce his shivering/jittriness.

Please follow up with the answers to my queries mentioned above. But any how it ll be better if a pediatrician examine him once thoroughly and arrive at a conclusion.

Thank you,regards.

ok - We will follow this up with the pediatrician.

When he shivers it is akin to the type of shiver that you may describe as "someone walking over your grave". They tend to occur in groups of 2 - 3, they last for maybe 5 seconds each, he does not lose consciousness and his weight/ height is in the normal range. However, during the shiver's he does tend to flex is arm/ leg muscles. I initially thought that he was hitting nerve endings in his teeth as part of the teething process, although this has continued following the teeth coming through fully.

He is fully XXXXXXX sits, crawls and pulls himself into a standing position without assistance. We will investigate supplements with the peadiatrician
