Question: I am asking about 5 year old boy. Last Thursday ( week ago) he got fever ( highest was 102) and day after he had bad diarrhea but no vomiting. Fever lasted until Friday evening. Diarrhea until Monday. Stool has been softer and lighter than usual after that and not having bowel movement every day. I am starting to get worried again though as his appetite is not back to normal and Tuesday he also started runny nose and cough ( slight)
Wednesday evening feelings chills again and fever up again 101. I am worried that stomach bug have complications or may it be another virus because his immune system is weak after first one. Myself had runny nose and allergy symptoms as we are in bad allergy season so i dont know if he might have got something from me or there are complications. My main worry is viral myocarditis or sepsis. That doesnt seem normal that he has fever again less than week after first one. Also 2 days ago he had 2 white spots on tip of tongue but they dissapearded next day, also keeps telling that mouth hurts inside. Please advise what to do, what symptoms to look for and what should be my worry level. He is very active child but this week has been off. I will go to doctors tomorrow

Brief Answer:
No need to worry

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have gone through your query and understand your concerned. The ontore thing XXXXXXX to be due to a single viral infection and does not indicate that the immune system is compromised. The white spots on the tongue can occur due to deficiency of certain B vitamins and this is commonly encountered during a viral infection. Giving some Vitamin B complex supplement for the next few days should help. Management of a viral infection is supportive and the infection is self limiting.

If the child is otherwise active you need not worry about sepsis. Getting the blood count checked will help to confirm. Viral myocarditis is rarely encountered and I do not think that you need to worry about it.

The appetite will gradually be back and you need not worry.

Thank you for answer. I am still confused though why he has fever today again after no fever for 5 days.. no stomach problems but cough and runny nose now. Is this complication or another virus. He is not as active as usual and not eat as well as before.

Brief Answer:
Get the blood counts checked

Detailed Answer:
Pardon me for the inadvertent delay in responding. I doubt if it is due to a different infection. Even if it is, there is no reason to worry and does not indicate anything concerning. However, since you mention that the activity is a bit less it would be preferable to get the blood counts checked. If the fever lasts for more than a couple of days from now, also get Widal test done to rule out typhoid fever.
