Posted on Thu, 27 Oct 2016
Question: Hi
After fighting with a fingernail fungus for over two years my dermatologist finally did a culture and it came back positive for candida. It is spreading and the thymol does not work should I take Diflucan or Lamisil since I've exhausted all topical treatment.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
First try methods to enhance your immunity

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

Fingernail fungus from candida is a common problem. There is nothing to be so worried about it. Candida is part of normal flora. Getting a candida infection means that your normal flora is altered. Now there is a difference between altering and having a disease.

Candida fingernail is more of cosmetic or painful problem. It does not cause any complications or affect your health in any bad way.

I told you all this is because I want you to try lifestyle measures. Once you started using antifungals like diflucan, your flora will alter further and you will end up taking it frequently to feel normal.

Lifestyle methods include:
- Doing regular exercise for atleast 30 min a day. Exercise can include gym, walk, yoga, swimming, cycling, etc.
- Take more of fruits and juices but avoid added sugar and sugary items
- Avoid unnecessary antibiotics which can alter flora to cause candida overgrowth
- Last but not least, take hygienic food and cleaner drinking water from an Reverse Osmosis system. I have seen this work in my patients, therefore I think that excess candida may be coming from unclean water in most cases.

I hope you have done blood tests to rule out causes of low immunity like complete blood count and fasting blood sugar levels.

Hope this clears your doubt. Let me know if I can assist you further.
