default
Posted on Thu, 16 Oct 2014
Question: I have a small flesh colored bump on my lower lip, it's painless and hardly visible but I can feel it when I rub my tongue over it. It's been there for months, I spoke to a pa and she said it was most likely a trauma, but I keep thinking about it, and it is causing me an enormous amount of anxiety. I'm a 22 year old male 6 ft 230 lbs. please help.

Brief Answer:
Mucocele or a mucosal tag...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

According to your description I am of the opinion that, the fleshy growth could be either a mucocele or a mucosal tag (an extra growth of mucosa following trauma).

Lips contain plenty of minor salivary glands, which may at times get blocked due to various reasons thus trapping the salivary secretions. The trapped secretions continue to balloon as the production of saliva continues.

Secondly, the mucosa of the lips may get trapped while chewing, thus causing a mucosal tag.

Do not worry! Both these conditions are relatively harmless. If you are very much worried about this, get it excised by your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. I'll be available for the follow-up queries.
