Suggest Treatment For Fluctuations In Blood Sugar Levels

Question: I am still having trouble with my blood sugars. Last night I had my highest yet..299. I had eaten a baked potato with butter and bacon pieces at 3:00 pm. I had checked my BS at 6:00pm. It seems like when I eat bread or potatoes it increases my BS but not as much as it has increased since I began taking Cymbalta. I really do not want to go off Cymbalta because mentally, it has given my normal life back to me without severe or any depression. I know I will have to give up hot bread and potatoes again, but I am willing to do it to live a normal life.

Brief Answer:
Diabetes

Detailed Answer:
Sorry to learn about your high sugars.

Cymbalta is not known to raise blood glucoses.

So you will have to try other means to control diabetes such as appropriate choice and dose of diabetes medications.
When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC (Complete Blood Count, also known as Hemogram; includes Hemoglobin, WBC and Platelet counts)
Electrolytes (Sodium and Potassium in particular)
HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin = your last 3 months' glucose average). Also known by other names such as GlycoHemoglobin or Glycated Hemoglobin or A1c
Liver function tests (SGOT , SGPT, Albumin, Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase)
Kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine)
TSH (checks your thyroid) 12 hour Fasting Lipid profile
Urine albumin to Creatinine Ratio (early sign of diabetes affecting the kidney)
25 hydroxy Vitamin D levels (ideal range 40 to 60 ng/ml = 100 to 150 nmol/liter)
Correct diagnosis and treatment requires the opportunity to examine the patient so you must see an endocrinologist in-person.

Cymbalta being prescribed by by neurologist, after He dc'd Buspar, is the only new medication I am taking. I lost weight (30 lbs. in a year with just eating right) and blood sugar results were great before the change to Cymbalta. Nothing else has changed.

I meant to say only new medication I am taking with my other medications.
