I had yesterday home made food and just sweets from outside but I had antibiotic yesterday morning and then again in afternoon almost after 12 hours. I don't this is happening because of antibiotics or food that I had.i was having throat infection so gp gave me antibiotic Clariva tablets.

Brief Answer:
Food Poisoning vs Clostridium difficle colitis (diarrhea due to antibiotic exposure)

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thank you for posting query at HCM.

History of new onset diarrhea (as in your case) usually has two causes:
1. Food poisoning
2. Infectious diarrhea (many bacteria are causative agents ( salmonella, E.Coli and so on)BUT one of them being Clostridium dificile that may invade intestine during antibiotic exposure).

Your history is NOT suspicious for other causes of diarrhea as you did not travel, did not do camping, did NOT ingest food that maybe unhygienic. However, Home prepared food that was not properly warmed after being refrigerated may cause diarrhea too.

If your also have episodes of "vomiting/nausea" and/or bloody diarrhea or noisy diarrhea (passage of gas with diarrhea), then it maybe due to food poisoning.

Symptoms of Clostridium induced diarrhea:
abdominal cramps, loose stool ( especially foul smelling) two to three times within a 24 hour period and fever maybe present . Vomiting and Fever not usually present.

Cause of the diarrhea can only be confirmed by doing stool test/culture and cytotoxin test for clostridium.

Meanwhile;
next step would be ( if symptoms dominant for food poisoning)
Diet modification
1. eat banana and yogurt
2. Avoid sweet food and junk food and Oily food
3. avoid meat
4. ingest juices and fruits
if these points help improve your diarrhea then it might have been occurred due to food poisoning.

If you already had a diet modification today and it did NOT help then:

STOP taking antibiotic (clariva) immediately and hopefully the diarrhea would subside in a day or two. Metronidazole 500mg maybe taken and you may discuss it with your treating physician.

Brief Answer:
Resolution of diarrhea but persistent abdominal discomfort.

Detailed Answer:
Firstly, Happy Ramadan to you and family.

Thank you for getting back to me.

Since loose stools have resolved by now, so now you may continue with normal diet.
Instead of taking ispagula husk with yogurt, now you may take the husk with "water". Dissolve Husk in water and take sips. Hope, it will resolve the discomfort and/or cramps.

Avoid eating stomach full.
walk atleast few steps after eating your Sahoor.

I also hope that throat infection has resolved by now.
otherwise, visit treating physician and/or do salt-water gargles, ingest pure honey.

Brief Answer:
Pharyngitis, productive cough and abdominal discomfort

Detailed Answer:
its pleasure to answer your queries.
on a lighter note, your also paying for it...

firstly, if your throat irritation/cough is persistent and its not getting better, then you may take augmentin or erythromycin after discussing your history with your treating physician .

secondly, stool color yellow to brown is NORMAL.
abdominal discomfort maybe related to eating habits.
try to take fiber rich diet and eat oranges/pear eveyday.
eat less rice. beef should be ingested occasionally.
do not eat stomach full and walk few steps before going to bed.
avoid oil rich food.
warm water with lemon drops maybe drunk 3to5 times a week(for one month) on empty stomach to aid in bowel movements.
add vinegar in Salad@every meal.

hope bowel habits would be normal.
wish you good and sound health.

you may also put a "direct question" to me via this portal.

any further questions are welcomed.
you may rate answer and leave a review if no further questions.

regards,
Dr Tayyab Malik
