
Suggest Treatment For Forgetfulness And Lack Of Focus



I am a working professional and this problem is like affecting me a big time.
This is not new but is now troubling me a lot. i can focus on things and be attentive. for e.g. if i read an article then there is a chance that i don't remember the last line/paragraph I read.
First time I noticed this problem during my college time but ignored it. Trust me this is crushing my self confidence lately.
I really want some suggestions, is this just my life style or some disorder. Hope for some genuine response.
Life style changes and good sleep will improve the symptoms.

You are a young working professional and have problem of focussing on things and poor attention. The symptoms can even occur when you have to read some article. These symptoms usually result in loss of confidence.
First of all I would like to tell you that poor focus or attention for short durations of a time can be a normal thing in a healthy individuals. But if such symptoms persist or cause significant distress to work or personal life then there is need for evaluation.
I want to tell you that low levels of Vitamin B12 or Haemoglobin could present with poor focus or symptoms of fatigue. Deficiency of B12 is very common in vegans. Get your B12 and haemoglobin levels checked to rule out these conditions. Start taking Vitamin B12 supplements as they will help to improve the focus.
Second thing that should be ruled out for poor focus is Hypothyroidism. In hypothyroidism other symptoms like fatigue, poor concentration, weight gain etc are also seen. Still to rule out subclinical hypothyroidism I would advise you to get your thyroid function tests done.
As we rule out these conditions then we can come on psychiatric aspects of such symptoms.
If the poor focus or symptoms like forgetting last line of paragraph occurs during reading only, then this could be due to anxiety. Due to anxiety individual may start to check whether he remember the things he has just read. Some times this checking becomes repetitive and individuals start perceiving that they have poor focus. So if you have symptoms mainly during reading then you should rule out this condition by self.
Other reason for such poor focus is mild depression. Such symptoms of poor focus can occur due to mild depression. Other symptoms like fatigue, low mood, lack of energy are also seen. I would like to ask you whether if you have such symptoms? In most cases there is no need to take treatment, just improving life style helps in improvement-
I would advise you to follow these things-
- Have good sleep, at least 7 hours a day. But don't sleep till late in morning.
- Avoid alcohol if you have habit of alcohol
- Drinking good strong coffee also helps in activation of mood.
- Take diets rich in proteins and carbs and low in fats. This will help to increase
tryptophan in brain and will improve concentration and focus.
- Omega-3-Fatty acids supplements help to improve such symptoms. Diets rich in these fatty acids are walnuts, hazelnuts, soybeans, flex seeds etc.
- Try to take breaks in between prolonged meetings.
- Spend your time in watching a good movie or in outing at least once a week.
- Don't think about the thing again and again that you are not able to remember what you are reading.
- Exercise daily and this will help to improve endorphins concentration in brain. This will lift your mood.

First of all many thanks for giving a detailed thought on my problem.
I would like to go a bit in detail on this and would proceed in the order of your answer.
This problem is not new,I am feeling this from last 3 yrs but was ignoring till the time it could be ignored, being a data analyst I have to be attentive and focused and should remember numbers. I remember, 3 yrs back i could remember a 10 digit mob no just by dialing it once or reiterating twice in my mind, I had a sharp memory.From last 2 yrs I have felt that I read words and things but they don't get rooted in my brain so i cant remember them, Only my eyes read the lines and not not my brain.
Now the thyroid thing we could safely rule that out,my weight and other symptoms are perfectly okay.
Coming to anxiety I don't face this problem only while reading,I cant remember the names of person I met for e.g. if i meet a person in a party (or accidentally), there is high probability that it would take a lot of effort in recalling the name of the guy. Similarly I cant recall a name if I have heard about him only once,while driving also I cant remember the right turn if I am new to that place. The point I want to make here is that its not only reading I am experiencing this even in my daily life and trust me this is frustrating.
Coming to my lifestyle and my nature.
I am a lazy guy with no physical activity, no gym, no outing. I love to stay at home doing nothing but watching television than going out with friends.I want to go gym, outing with friends but I cant do it, I don't know the reason,laziness? maybe.
I do feel low on energy and enthusiasm when I am at home, but when once I get up from my bed and get involved in an activity I don't feel the deficiency of energy or body-ache.
I sleep till late on weekends, till afternoon, even on weekdays also I get up at 10:30, and takes 15-20 mins to get ready for office. I usually get up when its starts getting late.
on personalty front, I am a very emotional guy and easily get hurt or upset.I think a lot about any problem, I easily get scared. I know there is nothing to be scared of, I have a perfect life but still even a slight uncertainty or problem can scare the hell out of me. I cant handle pressure, efficiency gets reduced exponentially under pressure. I am a very optimistic man, I would justify every wrong thing happening in the world, if given a chance I would even justify Ajmal Kasab even after knowing its wrong. I always try to look positive things for people. I trust people very easily, like if a thief will say I wont steal anything I would believe him and will trust him with my valuable goods.
I take emotionally driven decisions, ethically correct and practically incorrect decisions and suffers a lot.
Occasionally drinking and smoking.
I think i have expressed myself in the best way i could.
Lastly, should I see a psychiatrist in Pune?

Hello thanks for replying and providing details. You have nicely explained your clinical symptoms. Now to some extent we can provisionally reach to a conclusion. You are a analyst in job and excess stress and fatigue could be the reason for such symptoms.
Your symptoms are also there in other domains of life and they are not just limited to reading and are persistent since last 3 years. You are a optimistic person but very emotional also. You have habit of thinking about one thing again and again. You fails to recall names or remember phone numbers. Life style front is also not good. You make emotionally driven decisions and suffers a lot.
These symptoms can denote mild form of depression. First thing is to improve lifestyle like I have mentioned. Most of things should improve. For improvement of memory herbal medicines can be tried. These are available without prescription and help to improve cognition of individual, but there action is also not supported by research study. Still I found these preparations useful in some of my patients with such symptoms. Mentat tablet or syrup can be taken for memory.

I think we are in good shape as far as my problem is concerned. Since the problem is prolonged and I have lot to achieve in my career which I am loosing currently, so i would like to go for a proper medication and some clear shot treatment. I have to appear for CAT next year, so i want to get rid of this problem as soon as I can.
