Suggest Treatment For Frequent Dry Cough And Cold

Posted on Mon, 19 Jan 2015
Question: Dear Sir/Madam,
My son, one of the twin and nearly 3 year old has been coughing up only during the nights while sleeping for the past few months. I take him to the doctor who prescribe some syrup and he is okay for a weeek or two but then the cough gets over him. Its pretty painful because i loose sleep over it and I feel that I am not doing the best for him. Also I dont want him to consume lots of syrups, which i feel will not be good for his health in the long run. The cough is a combination of dry and with mucus ie. on somedays its dry cough and on other days its mucus because his nose is blocked and it obstructs his breathing and his sleep. Is there a permanent healthy cure like giving him good food / fruits etc., which will build his immunity. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
try monteluekast and flu vaccination

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Frequent cold and cough is very common upto 3 to 5 years.
Mostly they are viral or allergic in nature.
I would suggest you to get flu vaccination every year.
This will prevent most of the seasonal flu and has to be taken every year as the viruses keep changing every year.
Second suggestion is to take monteluekast as syrup 4mg daily in the evening.
Because his symptoms are more in the night which fit into allergic cough, taking monteluekast daily in the evening will help in reducing allergies.
It is very safe and without side effects.
All kinds of fruits and vegetables can be given safely to improve resistance

Also you can get allergy testing done for specific IgE.
This will help identifying the triggers for the cough which can be avoided once identified.

Wishing your child good health.
Regards
Dr Arun
