Suggest Treatment For Frequent Ectopic Beats

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Oct 2017
Question: I'm a 63 year old male and in good health. I eat well and exercise daily. For the past few months I've had a heavy (not faster or slower) heart rate. It just catches my attention and there are times that it seems to be connected to a dry cough that I also have. Once I cough, it relieves a little pressure that is built up regarding my heart....I've had tests that show no abnormalities including an EKG and ECHO. There are no cardiologists where I live and I'd really like to hear from someone that can "problem solve" and think about what connections might exist.

Brief Answer:
Provably ventricular ectopics

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir

After going through the medical details provided by you I would like to tell you that your symptoms are suggestive of ectopic beats.

Ectopics are premature heart beats which occurs before there their normal time. Usually these are harmless but if happen frequently then it needs evaluation.

Your ecg didn't showed anything because these beats happen transiently.

I would like to see your ecg and echo reports. Kindly upload them. After reviewing them I'll guide you further.

Kind regards

This is my second attempt at a follow up. Again, the heart beat ISN'T a different rhythm. It's just heavier than normal....not faster or slower. IF ectopics has a premature beat before the normal time, It seems that it would be noticeable.

The only symptoms are 1) a heart beat that is stronger/louder than normal with a slight pressure building up and 2) a cough that relieves that pressure.

Thank you for your response.

Thanks for the feedback

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for uploading your reports. I have carefully gone through you blood reports, xray and echo reports and found that only your cholesterol levels are slightly deranged which can very well be taken care with diet and exercise.

Now coming back to your problem. Sir I again want to repeat that the symptoms which you are experiencing is the most common presentation of ectopic beats and if not frequent they are harmless. And if frequent they can cause chest discomfort and bothers the patients. They can very well be controlled with the help of small dose of beta blockers but before that they need to be confirmed with the help of either an ecg or HOLTER MONITORING.

Excess consumption of coffee, Alcohol, tobacco and some medicines for asthma treatment can also trigger these ectopics.

Kindly discuss this with your treating cardiologist if the symptoms are bothering you.

Hope to have been helpful.

Kind regards
Dr Bhanu partap
