Posted on Mon, 30 Jun 2014
Question: Hi Doctor,
I have a kind of rash on my lower back, very inching. At the very beginning it was a small dry spot. I think I scratched too much. It becomes infected. Is there anyway I can send you a picture of it?
Thank you,

Brief Answer:
Fungal infecton with bacterial superinfection

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query and I have understood it. I have also looked at the Image.

I would keep a possibility of a fungal infection with secondary bacterial infection from scratching too much.

If I was the treating doctor

-I would normally advise my patients an oral antifungal (fluconazole 150mg once every week for 6 weeks).

-I also advice in my patients, a topical antifungal cream (e.g clotrimazole 1% cream) twice daily for 4-6 weeks.

-An OTC antihistamine like cetrizine once daily in the evening will help you with the itching

An empirical oral antibiotic for a week OR 10 days would take care of the secondary bacterial infection (My choice of oral antibiotic would have been Amoxycillin 500 mg in combination with clavulanic acid 125 mg, thrice daily, for a week OR Cephalexin 500ng thrice daily OR Cefadroxil 500 mg twice daily, for a week).

Hope this helps
