Question: Everytime I eat, I cough for a half an hour after. I feel like I have a shelf in my throat that everything gets caught on. I have had an endoscopy, laryngoscopy, as well as fluoroscopy. During this fluoroscopy, I ate a piece of bread with the barium solution on it and I choked for about 20 minutes after yet they say they can't see anything. Is there something else I can check into

Brief Answer:
GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease).

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having cough on swallowing. I would like to ask you few more details.

Is there any hoarse voice ?
Is there any belching or burning sensation in chest or regurgitation of partially digested contents ?

Kindly get back to be with the details.

Based on your clinical details, it appears to be GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease.

Physiologically, acid reflux develops when the sphincter muscle that closes the bottom of the esophagus fails to function resulting, reflux of stomach contents into mouth. Repeated reflux can cause scarring, allows the food to get caught in throat resulting in cough.

As such, your investigations (laryngoscopy/floroscopy are normal, I suggest you to follow these measure to overcome your health issues.

1. Take ppi inhibitor tab.prilosec (omeprazole 10mg) twice daily before food (half an hour prior).

2. Non spicy diet, avoid junk foods, daily exercise (walk).

3. keep head elevation in sleeping posture (extra pillow to prevent regurgitation).

4. Stop smoking or alcohol consumption (if you are with these habits).

5. Take small 6 meals instead of small large 3 meals.

6. Last but not least- stress free life style.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
