Herpes is a self-limiting condition that resolves in 5-10 days irrespective of treatment with antivirals like acyclovir. Hence, I do not think that you need a prescription. However, once infected, the virus lies dormant in the nerve endings of the affected area for a lifetime. Flare-ups occur whenever the immunity drops.
