Suggest Treatment For Grade 1 Varicose Veins In The Leg Causing Severe Pain
Question: Hi Doc, this is regarding my mother, she feels pain in her left leg down to knee, can't move and stand too much time, her leg veins are also dark green. she is 58 years and gaining weight (76 kg with height -5.2 feet).
As She could be having Varicose Veins leading to the pain and there could be an element of Osteoarthritis in the knee due to her overweight status, so I had gone through X-RAY of the affected knee done and a Color Doppler of the venous system of that limb. (As recommended by Dr XXXXXXX in my previous query)
Pls go through and suggest optimistic solution (with less treatment more ever exercise and dieting)

Hello and Welcome to HCM. Thanks for writing in to us with your health query. I have gone through your reports. Your mother is suffering from Grade I Varicose viens. Initially conservative treatment trial should be given. She should avoid prolonged standing. You can use Elastic stockings form the feet to the thigh to help the venous drainage return. She should not avoid walking . As for the knee osteoarthritis is concerned , it can be managed by reducing weight . Again to reduce weight she needs to walk and change her diet. Ask her to eat more of salads and less of carbohydrates. I understand its atricky situation as I am saying to avoid long standing hours , She should walk for 10 min then take rest and then again start walking.. It is very important for her to reduce weight. If the varicose are not managed by conservative method then the second step would be surgery, but I hope that will not be needed .
