Question: One side of my nose is always blocked since taking an antibiotic called phenoxymethylpenicillin, in addition i have a sore tongue at front with yellow coating at back with some elongated stalks there, also i have pressure in my forehead. All of these symptoms vary throughout the day but I have never experienced them before in my life. I have tried antifungals, tongue scraping, hydrogen peroxide wash all to no effect. My doctor says I have inflammed sinuses and prescribed avamys spray but i have not used yet as recently developed infected post nasal drip too. The drip has now gone but other symptoms remain. Please see pictures attached. I have changed to a basic diet of veg and chicken, no allergens. Bloods tests are all normal and no allergies from tests.

Brief Answer:
You are having granular pharyngitis and enlarged tonsils.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
I have gone through the pictures you have attached.
You are having chronic granular pharyngitis and enlarged tonsils.
This is mostly associated with sinusitis too.
And all these are interconnected.
These are due to bacterial infection.
You need to start higher antibiotics, anti histamine and anti inflammatory drugs.
Do antiseptic gargles 5-6 times a day. Do steam inhalation 4-5 times a day.
You might need tonsillectomy once this is over.
Please let me know
1. Have you ever consulted ENT doctor?
Please reply me answer of above asked question, so I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

I don't think this is related to my tonsils. I have attached a picture of my tonsils from when I had none of these symptoms and they look the same. The changes I notice are in the tongue and redness of the throat. I have tried everything you mention to no change. I would like to avoid a tonsillectomy unless it is 100% the cause of my issues. These issues did not exist until the specific antibiotic mentioned was used.

my blood tests all returned normal. I have tried vitamin b complex supplement but no difference. I eat whole food diet with greens anyway and chicken so should br getting nutrients.

I took the phenoxymethylpenicllin for 7 days but after one day was experiencing dryness and congestion of nose and dry mouth; by day 7 painful tongue and forehead throbbing pressure. These symptoms have reduced in severity but are still remaining and fluctuate between mild to high levels.

The reason for the antibiotic was from XXXXXXX 2015 to August 2015 I had a lot of mucus collecting in throat from post nasal drip. This mucus was infecting tonsils to cause stones so was given antibiotic to stop oral bacteria. When I took the antibiotic the post nasal drip stopped but all mucus seemed to stop. I have recently started having green yellow discharge again as seen in picture.

In 2007 I took amoxycillin for tonsillitus and have taken amoxycillin as a child for chest infections. I don't remember having any side effects not even dry mouth.

Have you tested for auto immune diseases?

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Possibility of penicillin hypersensitivity is also less.
Auto immune diseases can also cause similar symptoms. These diseases are rare in occurrence but they do occur.
Multi system involvement like sinuses, oral cavity, throat, lungs, kidneys, joints are commonly involve in this.
So please let me know
1. Have you ever tested for connective tissue diseases (CTD s).
2. Do you have joint pain?

I don't have any joint pain and haven't done any CTD test. I have done a blood test for inhalantallergies, urea + eGFR, XXXXXXX for vasculitus but all came back negative or in range.

I find when I talk I get pressure in the sinuses almost like blood pressure (as if body held upside down). I checked my blood pressure and it came back in normal range 130/80.

Hi, I have had an endoscopy done and was told my sinuses were dry but otherwise fine. I have attached a ct scan of sinus for you. The ct shows no mucus or inflammation but turbinate hypertophy which my radiologist said was normal nasal cycle. I do find the nose to be very blocked on one side only sometimes left or right. However when looking inside nose the congestion sometimes is not due to turbinates but seems more like blood pressure from deeper within nose.

Brief Answer:
You should start avamys nasal spray.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Health Care Magic.
In my opinion, you should start avamys nasal spray. It is having fluticasone. It is used for inflammation.
You should also take antihistamine nasal spray.
Both of these will relieve your nasal blockage.
Also take combination of antihistamine and anti allergic drugs.
Take all these drugs for 1-2 months to see any improvement.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

I was prescribed avamys and I actually just got it from the pharmacy. I was hesitant to use it as i had green discharge from the nose and the spray shouldn't be used if there is an infection. also, my tongue is yellow and it says in the drug notes that the spray can cause fungal infection.

No need to worry for fungal infection.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
No need to worry for fungal infection.
You should rinse your mouth thoroughly after nasal spray use. This will prevent fungal infection.
And also don't worry for active infection and flare up of infection by nasal spray.
Start nasal spray without any fear.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
