Question: My son XXXX who is nine years old has a peculiar problem where he grinds his teeth very hard while in his sleep. The grinding is so hard that I am woken up from my sleep many a times. The grinding of the teeth continues almost all night long and each night. I have visited a dentist and also a physician regarding this. I had been asked to give him medicines for ringworm which has not helped. I am worried about his teeth as he is getting all permanent teeth now and any damage would be lifelong. How can I help my son?

Brief Answer:
It is normal and does not need to be treated

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Healthcaremagic.

Grinding of teeth, also called bruxism, is a normal phenomenon in children. Although no specific cause has been identified, sometimes it is attributed to worm infestation although that might not always be the case. That is the reason deworming has not helped. I would not suggest any medications for this. This is a harmless condition and does not need to be treated. Please do not worry. I would simply ask you to remain in follow up with a dentist so that in case teething deformities occur, they can be easily addressed.

Hope that helps.
