default
Posted on Tue, 14 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, I have noticed I have some sort of growth behind my tonsils. It is visible only when I force it out at the back of my throat by doing arrrgg sound, sort of like gargling. It got me quite worried and I couldn't find anything online. Please see the picture; https://www.dropbox.com/s/dc3jgf88i4pr6qh/2015-06-26%2021.44.47.jpg?dl=0
otherwise it is not visible: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2gir03jvh4m5b5s/2015-06-26%2021.58.59.jpg?dl=0
Behind tonsils there is another structure similar to tonsils, not as large, but it does have some tonsil stones inside sometimes. Below the left tonsil on the picture is another structure. What is it?

Brief Answer:
inflamed/enlarged oro-pharynx structures;throat culture advised...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concerns.

1. I have gone through the photo you provided, and noted that your tonsils are inflamed and enlarged.

I have also noted white dots on your palatum durum (upper part), which makes me think over a bacterial infection.

2. The structures behind the tonsils are part of oro-pharynx. They are enlarged and inflamed too.

3. With regards to tonsils stones, I advise to consult with ENT specialist for specific evaluation and treatment.

A throat swab culture and sensitivity testing are advised to determine the right bacterial agent and antibiotic to use.

Keep good oral hygiene. Gargle frequently with warm water and salt.
Taking 1 teaspoon of olive oil (can also gargle) and honey can also help.

Wish fast recovery!

Hi,

thanks for your answer. The white dots are just remaining food, it is not there now. if I may, this enlarged part is also part of the oro-pharynx? https://www.dropbox.com/s/qpgco8cx6rh68pw/2015-06-26%2021.44.472.jpg?dl=0

It is more at the back of the throat and below the tonsil, which is hard to see on the picture.

Regarding treatment, I will follow your advices, but is there a way to treat it without antibiotics?

Thank you again.

Thank you!

With regards to treatment, if I was your caring doctor would like to make sure the right cause to enlarged tonsils:
- bacterial? strep?
- or virus? mono? etc.

Depending on the cause, we can decide for proper management. Antibiotics are necessary if bacteria are found and should be eradicated.

Of course, local hygiene and boosting your immunity through eating healthy and following healthy lifestyle regimen can also help.

Looking forward to have the photo in.

Brief Answer:
Enlarged palatine tonsils noted, part of oro-pharynx,explained below...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for providing the new photo.

The one you have circled is part of palatine tonsils. They are enlarged and seem to be laying deep inside.

Please take note that pharynx is a muscular tube connecting nasal cavity with larynx and esophagus.

It is divided into 3 parts depending on the location:
- nasopharynx (in contact with nasal cavity - superior part)
- oro-pharynx (exposing to the oral cavity - middle part)
- and laryngo-pharynx (in contact with larynx - lower part)

What we see with free eye is a part of oro-pharynx because the other part is laying deep inside, an ENT examination will see it better.

Palatine and lingual tonsils together with one third posterior part of the tongue are part of oro-pharynx. And what you see in the photo is enlarged palatine tonsils, which are also part of oro-pharynx.

Hope it was of help!
