Question: I am a 68 year old woman and my hair has started to fall out. I don't take estrogen and I don't eat a balanced diet. I also don't take supplements. My hair is falling out in lines running up and down my head.

Brief Answer:
Strongly suspecting a hormonal imbalance due to menopause to be the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Menopause and hair loss has a very old and well established relation. In menopause there is an imbalance of hormones like oestrogen and progesterone. Both these hormones play a vital role in the growth, health and restoration of hair.

I completely understand how this must be causing you stress, anxiety and frustration, but please do try your best to avoid this. I shall list all the possible approaches listed to tackle such a situation, they are:

+Stay well hydrated at all times

+Avoid stress as much as possible, use relaxation techniques (e.g. breathing exercises, etc)

+Diet including fruits, vegetables and whole grains in all meals. Walnuts, salmon, tuna, almonds, herring, flaxseed oil, etc. Avoid saturated fat

+Mild exercise each day, at least 30 minutes of walking

+Avoid chemicals, hair dryers, straighteners, etc. on your hair

+If you are comfortable, then speak to your doctor about initiation of hormone replacement therapy

While at the doctors please also get the following possible contributing factors investigated:

+Thyroid profile
+Blood glucose level
+Chronic conditions (comprehensive and elaborate blood panel_
+Rheumatic evaluation

I am sure with careful steps and consideration, we should be able to tackle your issue of hair loss. But in my opinion, the cause is most probably menopause and the hormonal imbalance it causes. I hope you find my response both helpful and informative, please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
