Suggest Treatment For Headaches And Neck Pain

Posted on Wed, 22 Feb 2017
Question: Sometime during the day last Friday or Saturday, I had sudden neck pain at the base of my skull, a headache, and it extends into my right shoulder and has begun in the left as well. It's getting worse. It's difficult (nearly impossible) and quite painful to turn my head. (I have to use my upper body.) I am also having spasms. Also, the muscles in my hand and the arch of my feet drawing up. When it happens, it hurts and will give the appearance of disfigurement. Added to this list of complaints is a burning, pins & needles, yet, numb-like pain in my extremities. I am getting Charley Horse pain in my calves more often and frequently, too. Add achy, dull, mostly steady pain in the back of my upper left thigh, too.

I haven't pulled, lifted, pushed, fell, had any accident or mishap that I can think of that could do this.

I, unfortunately, do not have an income or health insurance at this time as my husband recently died unexpectedly at age 52. So, I am turning to the internet for now. Any suggestions?

I'm 53 and have several pre-existing conditions. Among those are a history of Crohn's disease, Barrett's esophagus, clinical depression, anxiety, hypertension, reactive airways disease, four spinal/back surgeries at L5-S1, degenerative disc disease, (still have chronic severe back pain), arthritis, mitral valve prolapse, heart murmur, skin cancer (benign) diagnoses x3, and was treated for PNH for several years (I don't know if it goes into remission but I've not had any issues with it for the last two years). I question if it was a misdiagnosis as it took a while to figure out what was wrong and how to help me. Whatever the blood disorder was/is, has not required me to receive my treatment of blood transfusions as an inpatient. The pharmacist at the hospital worked with the doctors to help work out a safe method for me to receive the life-saving transfusions as an inpatient for 2-3 days every few weeks. I am allergic to NSAID's, Iron, Benadryl. Flexeril makes it difficult to breathe and Phenergan causes hallucinations.

I don't know if you needed any of this extra info. I'm just miserable, tired, and in pain. I doubt it's worth an ER visit. I wouldn't want to go there and waste their, or my, time and resources.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
cervical spondylosis / neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the query.

First of all,my deepest condolences for the loss of your husband. May Lord give you all the strength to stand strong in these hard times.

I have gone through your question in detail and it seems that the present symptoms in the neck and shoulders is due to a cervical spondylitis or a cervical disc prolapse causing bilateral spinal nerve root compression. This is resulting in neuropathy and severe pain in the neck, shoulders and arms.

The tingling numbness is also due to the same reason with or without vitamin B12 deficiency.

You should use a cervical collar and do neck exercises minimum for 10 minutes, twice a day.

Application of local analgesic sprays followed by hot fomentation will help.

Pregabalin, methycobalamin with multivitamin tablets will help relieve you from neuropathy symptoms.

Physiotherapy with cervical traction, infra red, short wave diathermy or LASER therapy will be helpful.

If the symptoms do not improve within the next 5 days,i would suggest a ER visit and get a MRI / Xray of cervical spine.

I hope the answer was useful to you.

Feel free to ask me any doubts that you may have.

Thank you.
Best wishes.
