Suggest Treatment For Headaches And Persistent Back Pain

Question: Good morning! My name is XXXXXXX Florell and I have a 16 year old son who is not feeling well. He started feeling poorly yesterday morning. He is pale, has a headache, complains of back pain in his kidney area, and says his entire abdominal area feels like it is on fire. He temperature with two different thermometers reads 96 and 95.9. I am very concerned and have no idea what to think of these symptoms. I did call the local medical clinic and they can get him in today at 2:00, but I wanted to try to research and see if I could perhaps find any answers before then as to what might be going on with him. He has no energy. He's been playing basketball and was sick a few weeks ago when a virus went through the school and most kids were sick. He was in bed at that time five days. Since then, he had seemed to recover OK.. but his coaches told him last week that his energy level seemed very low and they were concerned about that. Any thoughts or ideas as to what might be going on? I look forward to speaking with someone.

Brief Answer:
Omeprazole and paracetamol, rest and fluids and consider a urinalysis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.

I carefully read your question and understand your concern related to your son.

There are a couple things that might come to a doctor's mind when reading the symptoms your son has.

The most common one is a viral infection that your son might be going through. It might cause weakness, paleness, body pain, abdominal discomfort, headache, body pain etc. You are doing the right things by making sure he stays hydrated and eats. I would say go on to give him plenty to drink and frequent small amount of food also. Symptomatic treatment is what is done in these cases. If he has a burning sensation in his upper abdomen I would try omeprazole 20 mg, 2 capsules to reduce that feeling if it is related to stomach irritation. Also some paracetamol for back pain and the headache would be good to use.

If his urine is not burning and no changes in the urine color or odor and especially if no fever than it is less likely he has a kidney infection but the best way to know it is by having a urinary test so I would recommend a simple urinalysis to rule out urinary infection.

If he is very weak and pale a CBC to check for anemia would be something to consider but the doctor will decide the need for this after he has a consultation and thorough check of your son.

So to sumarize:
1. continue to give your son plenty to drink and frequent small amount of food
2. resting is good for him these 3-4 days
3. having some omeprazole and paracetamol might reduce his symptoms and be helpful
4. seeing a doctor would be a good idea to rule out other causes of the symptoms especially having a simple urinalysis to rule out urinary infection.

I hope this is helpful and answers to your question but please let me know if any more clarification is needed.

I wish your son will get well soon.

Kind regards
