Question: Hello Doctor,
I had contacted you in this forum earlier regarding for my new born baby hearing test. My new born had failed OAE hearing test at 3rd week. She failed again at 4th week. Following your instruction to do test after 1 month, we went again to perform test at close to 9 weeks and she failed again. It was showing refer. We have observed that she is responding to sounds but now I am not sure and anxious. Is it too early to determine any thing as she is hardly 2 months old now. How should we proceed from here.
We deeply appreciate your help and guidance here .

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing.

1. Since you have three 'refer' OAE results, you can proceed directly with a ABR (BERA) with an ASSR test at three months of age.

2. Wax/oil/debris in the external ear canal, fluid in the middle ear, an improper or blocked probe, movement or crying can result in an abnormal OAE result. These should be ruled out first.

3. If the ABR (BERA) and ASSR tests are normal, no major issue is expected.

4. If the ABR (BERA) and ASSR tests are abnormal, repeat the ABR (BERA) and ASSR tests after another three months (at age 6 months).

5. After this a full hearing assessment, behavioral evaluation, imaging tests will be necessary.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
