Suggest Treatment For Heart Palpitations

default
Posted on Wed, 12 Apr 2017
Question: I have a question about heart palpitations. I've been having them consistently for the last 24 hours, about one every ten-twenty seconds. Is this of concern? I have congenital heart disease (coarctation of aorta (repaired twice), ASD, Subaortic membrane, BAV, and Aortic aneurysm). I've had a recent echo, EKG, and MRI that revealed no big changes.

Brief Answer:
Need not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ma'am

I understand your concern for your health, am Dr Bhanu Partap and am a cardiology practitioner.

After going through the medical details provided by you I would like to tell you that as your recent EKG, ECHOCARDIOGRAM and MRI revealed no significant abnormality so no need to hurry as of now.

Possible cause other than your congenital heart defect could be an increased stress, increased caffeine intake in form of coffee or cigarettes.

What you can do is just check if any of the above factors are there with you if yes you can curb them and your palpitations will be relieved. If no then I would like to advise you to wait for another 24 hrs.

Even after that if palpitations persists then it's advisable to get another EKG done to see what heart rhythm is going on. And also I would like to start you on a low dose Beta Blockers to control your symptoms.

I hope this information will answer your query and guide you in the right direction. If you have any other doubts you can ask me back or else you can close the discussion and kindly rate the answer.

Wish you good health

Thank you. I haven't consumed any more caffeine (any more than usual) and I don't smoke - never have. I can't think of any stress I'm under, but I'll wait 24 hours and see what happens. Would you ever recommend going to the emergency room for palpitations? I feel fine otherwise, which makes me think waiting is fine. If they don't subside, I'll call my cardiologist tomorrow.

Brief Answer:
Hello again

Detailed Answer:
Palpitations that leads to dizziness or syncope or chest discomfort usually requires a visit to an Emergency Room which is not there in your case. So just relax and wait for sometime.

If they doesn't subside then consulting your treating cardiologist is a wise choice.
