Question : My mother has a rare condition called hemiballism. Is there any new information on this condition? She is now on her second medication for this but it doesn't seem to be working.

Brief Answer:
Be in touch with her treating Neurophysician

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for the query under Healthmagic . I have read it & understand the concern.
Hemiballism is caused basically by dysfunction of sub thalamus of brain. The causative factor can be Nonkitotic hyperglycemia/ injury to brain/ syroke/ Brain tumor/ neoplasm/ infection like Toxoplasmosis.
I feel it's essential to treat basic cause to get a long standing result...( & is usually started in the beginning itself) this treatment along with symptoms controlling drugs would be ideal
I would request you to discuss this with her treating doctor ( weather she would stand the investigations/ weather the cause is treatable or not )
* As far the symptomatic control I can inform you few newer things-
- Tetra benazine/ Haloperdol./ Botulinum injections
- ITB therapy
-some neurosurgical procedures
Using them would of course be her treating Neurophysician's choice, depending on his own opinion & also her condition & age.
I hope the answer was both informative & useful to you. Any follow up query is welcome.
