Posted on Tue, 6 Oct 2015
Question: this is a little hard to describe, but I get this hollow, airy feeling in my chest. Quite often actually. My pulse is not racing and my heartbeats are steady. I have high blood pressure which I take metoprolol and lisinipril for. No other symptoms. I do have anxiety and panic disorder, but I'm not sure that's it.

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms seem to be related to anxiety.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Your symptoms seem to be related to anxiety.

Have you measured you blood pressure during these episodes? Do you experience other symptoms like difficulty breathing or lightheadedness? How long do these episodes last?

I recommend consulting with the GP for a careful physical examination, a resting ECG, a chest x ray and some blood lab tests like:

- complete blood count (for anemia)
- thyroid hormone levels
- blood electrolytes
- fasting glucose
- kidney and liver function tests

to exclude other possible causes that may mimic this clinical scenario.

If all the above tests result normal, we could conclude that these feelings are caused by pure anxiety.

Hope to have been helpful!

Feel free to ask any other questions, whenever you need!

Best regards,

Dr. Iliri

I have measured my BP and its normal. No other symptoms. I've had those blood tests and all of my are within normal levels. It can last for a couple of minutes or maybe an hour. It sometimes goes away and comes back through tour the day. So, with all that, you think it's anxiety and not heart related?

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms are not cardiac related.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

Your symptoms are not cardiac related. You can be sure about that.

So relax and don't think about it.

There is nothing to worry about!

I recommend consulting with a specialist in the field of anxiety and panic disorders for a detailed diagnosis and the proper treatment option.

Psychotherapy and anxiolytics could be very helpful.

Hope to have been helpful!

Best wishes,

Dr. Iliri
