Please find attached my husbands lipid profile report. As you can see, his cholestrol level is somewhat high
His hieght is 5 ft 8 inches and weight is 81 kgs.
Could you please suggest what should we do? Do we need to visit a doctor? Does he need to take medications?
Can you please tell me what all dietary restrictions are required?
Regards, XXXXXXX
Both Life Style Changes AND Drug are necessary
Detailed Answer:
Hi friend
Welcome to Health Care Magic
Mr XXXX’s BMI (Body Mass Index) is 27.2 = OVERWEIGHT /
[Normal weight: 18.5 - 24.9 / Overweight: 25 - 29.9 / Obese: ≥ 30]
He should reduce his weight
His total cholesterol / and LDL-C are high
HDL is good cholesterol – higher, the better.
LDL is bad cholesterol – lower, the better. In the absence of any other risk factor 100 is ideal for LDL-C. In the presence of other diseases (especially Diabetes and/or heart disease), 70 should be the aim.
Keep his weight to normal / even a little less
Quit smoking, if he is a smoker
Do regular EXERCISE – say walking or jogging - 30 minutes a day / at least 5 days in a week. Healthy FOOD is a must. Avoid saturated fats – coconut oil, palm oil, butter, ghee, full cream milk...Avoid junk foods in particular – French fries have palm oil / Pizza has cheese / XXXXXXX sweets are made in ghee.../ Change to Poly-un-saturated oil – like sun flower oil. / Include Mono-un-saturated oil – Olive oil.
This level is rather high and is unlikely to be controlled by these alone / because it is also manufactured in the liver – and that is determined by heredity. He needs drugs – Statin is the first choice.. there are several in the class – atorvastatin for example… generally we start with 20 mg…
Repeat the test in 6 to 8 weeks. .. / if still high, increase the dose - the dose is up to 80 mg / if still high, another drug like ezetimibe is added.
Mr XXXX should see a doctor – for routine examination / appropriate prescription and follow up
He should also see a Dietician – for more information on his diet
Good luck
God bless you
