Question: Hi, I have 2.9 year old daughter suffering from fever and cough for 3 days fro now. Doctor suggested cal pol-7ml, astral in and relent. Last night I gave her 3 ml of asthalin and at 12.30, I gave her 7 ml of calpol. Immediately she vomited and was coughing very bad. Then I gave her calpol at 3.00 am again as fever seems to be very high and after 10 mins she vomited again. But fever is not reducing. I am planning to give her calpol again at 9.00 am and 10.30 relent and asthalin. My concern is is this the right mediation for her? How long will this last?

Brief Answer:
Looks like viral illness or cough

Detailed Answer:
Hi....by what you quote I feel this is viral illness. But as the doctor has prescribed Asthalin, there could have been a wheeze too.

But, If your kid is normal in between fever episodes in a single day...I don't think you should worry as its only 3rd day of fever. Danger signs include breathlessness/ rash/ low urine output/ seizures/ unconsciousness/ blood in motion. Don't worry if these are not there & the kid is active.

Please answer the questions -

1. Did she have wheeze previously?
2. How is her activity in between fever?
3. Does she have any of the danger signs mentioned above?
4. Is she breathless or only cough?
5. Does anybody in family have any allergy or wheeze or atopy?

She is very active in between fevers and able to eat BF, lunch and dinner(though, little less quantities than usual).

Answers to the above questions:

1. Yes, I noticed it this time.
2. Very active, playful.
3. No dangerous signs as mentioned above.
4. It's only cough
5. I have slight asthma and use asthalin inhaler when I have breathing/cough problem.

She also has lot of congestion and nose was blocked last night and fever and cough are not controlling.

Brief Answer:
Viral associated wheeze

Detailed Answer:
Hi...this history and your findings are pointing towards a viral associated wheeze.

Its viral illness only. Do not worry. Continue same medicines. This season cough can take 1-2 weeks to settle.

DO NOT WORRY IF KID IS ACTIVE.
