Suggest Treatment For High Fever, Nasal Congestion And Cough In A Child

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2016
Question: My 3 year old child had high fever (102-103) for 1.5-2 days - 2 days ago - but after giving her crocin syrup it subsided well. During the two days, the fever went down after giving crocin but came again afetr 8-9 hours after which we gave crocin syrup again. Apart from this there was no nose block or cough that time. Since last 2 days there is no high fever; only slight fever in the range of 99-100 occassionally and not all the time. However since yesterday there has been nose block and cough - more during nights when sleeping. What medicene must be prescribed. please let me know.

Brief Answer:
It's quite common for viral illness to cause cough

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.
Cough and cold are viral 95% of the times in children. For cold you can use anti-allergics like cetirizine and for nose block, saline nasal decongestants will do.

If fever - Paracetamol can be given in the dose of 15mg/kg/dose (max ceiling dose 500mg) every 4-6th hourly, that too only if fever is more than 100F. I suggest not using combination medicines for fever, especially with Paracetamol.

For cold and cough, you can use Cetrizine at 0.25mg/kg/dose every 12 hourly for 3 days.

For nasal block, plain saline nasal drops will do, every 4-6th hourly to relive nasal congestion.

These are prescription medications and you will need one for it.
