Suggest Treatment For High Fever While Having Mononucleosis

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jan 2016
Question: Hi there. My 6 year old daughter just woke up crying that her eyes hurt. She also has a fever of 102.0. Nothing else bothers her, but she was recently diagnosed with mononucleosis about 3 weeks ago. Should I be concerned she is having complications with mono?

Brief Answer:
Viral fever, tablet paracetamol

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome
I have gone through your query.
Post mononucleosis, generalized fatigue is noted. But the fever that you have mentioned is less likely to be related. Therefore it doesn't seem to be complication. This appears to be viral in nature. She should be fine with symptomatic treatment. Regarding eye, is there any redness and or swelling. Fever it self might be responsible for it.

You may give her bananas, rice, applesauce, toast or soft easily digestible semisolid diet can also be given. Further, avoid giving any junk food or oily, spicy food, fatty foods, sugary foods, dairy products, etc. until recovery is complete.

Replace lost fluid and salts due to increased water loss from body due to fever: Give her broth, soup, fruit juices, soft fruits, or vegetables.

Avoid the following foods: Dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.), Cold drinks - stick to warm tea or water as long as symptoms persist.

I would suggest you for tepid sponging and over the counter antipyretic like acetaminophen 250 mg thrice a day for two days.

If the child is showing distress, irritability, refusal to have feeds, vomiting or diarrhea, then a pediatrician must be consulted immediately. Please keep record of temperature every 4 hours so that the pattern of fever is known.
This provisional advice provided by me is based entirely on the input provided to me. I would suggest examination by the doctor.

Hope this helps.
Take care.
