Question : Hello Doctor,
My son who is 4 years old has been diagnosed with "acute streptococcal pharyngo tonsillitis". We met a duty doctor in a hospital today and doctor has recommended " Refzil O" 250mg for 6 days. however when we checked with our regular Pediatrician he has recommended 125mg dosage instead of 250mg.
Currently my son is having fever touching 104-105 degree F and we are controlling his fever using 170 mg sopossitory. His CRP has come out to be 102 mg/L.
Pls advise the right dosage needed for antibiotic.
Thanks
XXXX
Brief Answer:
Refzil 'O'(cefpirome) dose is 30-60 mg/kg IM or IV
Detailed Answer:
Hi,Thanks and welcome to HCM.
The dose of Refzil- O or Cefpirome is 30-60 mg/ kg/ day either IM or IV every 12 hourly.
Exact dose can be calculated if we know the weight of the baby. So it should ideally start with 125mg (low dose) and can go further below 250mg.
If temperature is controlled by suppository it is OK, otherwise
Paracetamol 15 mg/kg 4-6 hourly depending on the fever.
Tepid sponging repeatedly will make your child comfortable
Hope this answer serves your purpose.
