Question: My sister (62) experienced a fall with resulting in a big hip bruise. She is able to walk, climb stairs, and function quite well, but this happened five days ago. She is still experiencing some hip pain (maybe 3-5 on a 10 point scale), but can move her foot outward and inward, raise her knee, etc. Is it likely she's got more than a major bruise? Are x-rays indicated. Tahnk you.

Brief Answer:
I do not think an X-ray is necessary

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your question.

It is very unlikely that your sister has a fractured hip if she is able to do all of the things that you described. I do note in her past medical history that she is osteopenic which would put her at a higher risk of hip fracture. If her symptoms continue to improve then I would not have thought it necessary for her to have an X-ray. She should however take precautions to minimise her risk of falling in the future such as removing tripping hazards around the home and consider using a cane.

I hope this answers your question.

Best wishes
