Suggest Treatment For Hole Of The Salivary Gland Duct After Surgery

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Apr 2014
Question: hi I had surgery to remove a salivary gland stone last week from my submandibular gland. the procedure was done through my mouth. I have just noticed that the doctor left a hole the size of a small pea in the bottom of my mouth where saliva comes out of. When I eat I noticed that the sauce/juices from what I eat go in that hole and cause my gland to swell. What is this hole? Was it intentional or an accident?

Brief Answer: It is normal after surgery!! Detailed Answer: Hello Please dont worry , this hole must be the opening of the salivary gland duct , which must have been incised , so as to remove the stone from it. Please dont worry as this is normal after stone removal and will slowly heal after surgery in 2-3 weeks. You should avoid sour foods like sauces for sometime and also rinse your mouth after every meal so that the food does not accumulate there. Please meet your doctor if it persists for more than 2 weeks or causes recurrent or painful enlargement of your submandibular gland! Thanks

The doctor told me he may leave my gland open with a hole toward the back of my tongue. I told him I did not want it left open to drain in my mouth. The hole has no stitches around it and it does not appear that it will close. Therefore there is no saliva coming out of the duct in the front under my tongue on one side. Have you ever heard of such a thing where the gland would be left open with a hole in it? I am scheduling an appt with a different ent tomorrow to advise me. But please provide whether a hole kept open in the bottom of the mouth would be something a dr would do After this type of Surgery

Brief Answer: It is common!! Detailed Answer: Hello! Please dont worry , i can understand your concern but this is perfectly normal thing to do! The normal submandibular gland normally opens int the floor of the moth , below the tongue via a pipe /duct, when a stone is removed from the duct , it has to be incised and we normally dont stitch it back again otherwise the stone will form again. This is a normal protocol and there is nothing wrong in it. However if you are still concerned , you can always consult a different ent doctor , i am sure he will also tell you the same! Take care!
