                                            Question : Hi, I have type II Diabetes and I'm insulin dependent. My blood sugar was low this morning - 80 and I waited (as instructed by my Endocrynologist) until after I ate to give myself my insulin injection (24 IU). Later, around 3:30 I started feeling pretty clammy & sweaty. I've been getting these feelings for years and I'd always attributed them to menapause, but I'm 66 now and I figured that should be stopping. Around 4:30 or so I started feeling a little shaky. When that happens I usually attribute it to my diabetes, so I grabbed a snack of "goodness knows" granola & dark chocolate. I figured that should hold me off until my husband and I got home from a trip we'd taken up to the Mayo Clinic in XXXXXXX FL. When we got home about a half hour later I was really clammy, sweaty , shaky and not steady on my feet. I instructed my husband to get me some o.j., but he said it was too old. He said before I do anything to take my blood sugar. So, I did and it was 48! So he got me some cranberry Jc. by Northland and a shortbread cookie by Walker's. All very good products. I started feeling a little better, but still not great. 45 mins. Later he said to take my blood sugar again, so I did. This time it was 47! Now I don't know what to do?

                                    Brief Answer:
How to treat hypoglicemia;
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone carefully through your concern.
First of all i would recommend to drink a juice containing sugar; Coca-Cola, orange or apple juice (200 ml), check the blood sugar after 15 min and retake another juice or eat a banana.
Repeat it three times or until you reach normal blood sugar ( over 80mg/dl).
If it persists low, you should go te ER for intravenous glucose infusion.
The reason of the hypoglycemia is the large dose of insulin.
You should lower the dose of basal insulin and boluses as your treating physician will suggest.
Hope the information will help.
Feel free to ask if you have still queries.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta
