Suggest Treatment For Increased Urinary Frequency While On Pain Medication

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Aug 2015
Question: I have nocturnal urinary frequency due to the pain medication I take for chronic pain. I have asked a few drs about this including my pain management Dr and they have no suggestions. I have no pain I am just up 5-6 times a night and it is bothersome. I hardly go during the day because the meds contract the bladder muscle or puts it in a spasm. Have you heard of this and do you have any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Possible anticholinergic side effects of analgesics.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,

I understand your concern.

Your symptoms possibly reflect excess"anticholinergic side effects"

This is a common clinical scenario.

Many pain killers can cause excess daytime spasms reducing urine frequency and reverse effects at bedtime.

Avoiding the bedtime dose of analgesic will largely correct the symptoms.

All drugs causing overactive bladder have to be withdrawn.

Avoid excess intake of water at bedtime.

Kegel exercises, bladder training, and weight maintenance can all positively affect your symptoms.

Consultation with an expert Urologist helps.

Post your further queries if any,
Thank you.

Is there any medication that I could take during the day to relax the excess daytime bladder spasm?

Thank you for understanding. You are the only Dr. that has understood my symptoms and I have talked to at least 4 one of them being a Urologist.

Brief Answer:
Anti spasmodic drugs will be helpful.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,

You can use Antispasmodics like dicylomine twice daily to relieve your day time bladder spasm. I am not sure you might get it over the counter. You can ask your local doctor about this drug.

Thank you.
