Suggest Treatment For Indigestion, Abdominal Cramps And Bloating

Question: Hi Dr, I had indigestion, abdominal cramps, bloating and could see mucus in the stools for more than a week and it was not reducing. Not sure maybe because i ate some raw salads or something. I guessed it may be some gastrointestinal infection. I did not have any nausea or dysentry though. I started using O2 -ofloxacin and ornidazole tablets twice daily. I have used it for 6 days. I feel good now, the abdominal cramps and mucus has stopped. Can I stop it now. What is optimum duration for use of O2 -ofloxacin and ornidazole for intestinal infection ? Please help. Thanks in Advance !

Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and am sorry for the situation you are in.

Your symptoms are indicative for possible intestinal infection. O2-oofloxacin is a broad spectrum antibiotic. It can be used for up to 7 days.

Ornidazole is an antibiotic used to treat gram negative microorganisms and intestinal parasites. It can be also used for up 7 days.

Probiotics are advised to take too and increase water intake.

Thanks Dr. I need some more information -

a. After using the O2 -ofloxacin and ornidazole do I need to mandatorily follow it up with a luminal amebicide like Diloxanide furoate ? But this requires a prescription. I am not be able to visit a gastroentrologist. Is there an over the counter alternative which works like a luminal amebicide ?

b. What lab tests do I need to get done to confirm the eradication of intestinal parasites ?

Hi back,

1. diluxanide is a luminal amebicide. It is used in intestinal amebiasis. However, first we want to make sure you really have amebiasis.

2. Confirmatory tests include:
- stool examination for ova / parasites
- abdominal ultrasound

You can follow up with your regular /family doctor , no need to consult a gi specialist.

Once again, should determine first that you have amebiasis, then discuss for follow up treatment and management.
