Brief Answer: You may conceive after treatment. Detailed Answer: hello and welcome to HCM, I understand your issue. Please do not worry. In 30% cases of infertility there are problems in the male partner. So these are not uncommon issues. Now about treatment. First get your husband examined by a doctor and look for any local causes of this abnormal sperms like presence of varicocele or dilated veins in scrotum, hydrocele or infections or hormonal dysfunction. Check to see if any of you smoke or drink or use illicit drugs as they are common causes of this. Exposure to excessive heat, very tight clothing may also lead to this. A serum testosterone and chromosomal analysis of husband may be needed according to the results of examination. The treatment is to avoid any identifiable factor like heat exposure, drugs etc. Use of anitoxidants like vitamin C, E, and A are useful. Steroids may be also tried and a course of antibiotics if infection is suspected. It takes 3 months after beginning of treatment for the new sperms to come up. So test the semen again after 3 months. Keep regular contact in the intervening period to flush out the abnormal sperms. If it still persists then other treatment options like IUI [ intrauterine insemination], ICSI [ injecting the sperm directly inside the ovum] are there. So pregnancy will not be an issue. So do not worry. Get registered at an infertility clinic under a specialist and start treatment. Hope this satisfies your query. Thanks for using HCM. Feel free to ask any more questions that you may have. I am here to help. Have a good day. Dr Madhuri Bagde Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist
