Suggest Treatment For Inflammation Of The Superficial Vein After Intravenous Cannulation

Question: I was discharged from hospital before 3-4 days.
Doctor had put some needle like thing in my left arm for giving injections and glucose bottles through it.

This has been removed but it still pains there. When I touch on the nerve, in which it was injected, it is swollen and hard. I can feel the entire nerve like a small tiny pipe because of this swelling. I have attached few pics of the same.

I am applying ice on it for last 3 days, but swelling doesn't reduce much and whenever I touch there or stretch my arms, it pains.

Please advise what should be the reason and what can I do for this?

Brief Answer:
Please apply THROMBOPHOB gel over the painful area 3 to 4 times a day

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your qeury in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The pictures are not available. However it looks like you have developed an inflammation of the superficial vein in which the IV canula was inserted.

2. This is a common occurrence and it is painful but not considered a serious condition.

3. What has happened is that the walls of the vein have got inflamed and this is called superficial thrombophlebitis.

4. Please apply THROMBOPHOB gel over the painful area gently about 3 to 4 times a day. Thrombophob ointment contains heparin medicine and will reduce the swelling and treat the condition. Please do not massage the area.

5. The condition will heal in 3 to 5 days after application of the ointment.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
