Brief Answer:
Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia or Neuralgia of other nerves that supply the ear

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Welcome to HealthCareMagic.com I am Dr.J XXXXXXX Anto Bruno Mascarenhas, and I am here to help you. I have read your question with care and understand that you have a sharp pain every so often deep inside my ear. Your doctor had originally thought it was Shingles since you also had some numbness in your face, but you were medicated for that and you are still experiencing occasional sharp pains in my inner ear.

This can be due to Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia or Neuralgia of other nerves that supply the ear. You have to have a Clinical Examination and High Resolution CT Base of Skull with 3D Reconstruction (Plain and Contrast) and MRI to find out whether bony lesions, Vascular Loops or Soft tissues impinge on these nerves

The treatment depends on the cause. One we have found out the cause, we can plan the treatment accordingly

I would suggest you to consult a Neurosurgeon at the earliest
Hope you found the answer helpful.

If you need any clarification / have doubts / have additional questions / have follow up questions, then please do not hesitate in asking again. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Best Wishes for Speedy Recovery
